Wednesday 29th November 2023 is the 800th anniversary of the approval of the Rule of the Friars Minor. On that day 800 years ago, Pope Honorius III gave approval to Francis of Assisi for the Franciscan Family. Within a few years of approval, the Friars arrived in Ennis and the presence of the Franciscan family in this town continues to flourish to this day. We are blessed to have the Friars, Poor Clare Sisters, and Secular Franciscans in our parish.
On the Feast of Christ the King, Franciscans all over Ireland gathered in St Patrick’s College Maynooth to celebrate the 800th anniversary. Archbishop Dermot Farrell presided, assisted by the Provincials of the Friars, Fr Aidan McGrath OFM and Fr Sean Kelly OFM Cap.
Ennis was well represented at the ceremony by the Friars, Poor Clares, and Secular Franciscans.
